Gutters & Downspouts

Seamless 6-inch aluminum, copper, and half-round gutters with proper downspouts and splash blocks.

Typical timeline: 2–5 days
Gutters & Downspouts
Undersized or under-sloped gutters are the number-one cause of foundation problems in Houston homes. Standard 5" gutters overflow in a Gulf Coast downpour. We install 6" seamless aluminum as the default, sloped 1/4" per 10 feet, with 3x4 downspouts (not 2x3) and splash blocks or below-grade drain tie-ins that carry water at least 6 feet from the foundation. Gutter guards (micro-mesh, not the plastic screens) are optional but recommended if you have oak or pecan trees.

Materials

What we install vs. what corner-cutters use.

Gutter size

What we install

6" seamless aluminum or 5" half-round copper.

Common shortcut

5" K-style undersized for Houston rainfall.

Why it matters: 5" gutters overflow in any real Houston rain.

Hangers

What we install

Hidden hangers with 3" screws every 24".

Common shortcut

Spike-and-ferrule every 36".

Why it matters: Spikes work loose within a year or two.

Downspouts

What we install

3x4 with 6 ft splash extensions or below-grade tie-ins.

Common shortcut

2x3 dumping at the foundation.

Why it matters: Water at the foundation = cracked slab and wet crawlspace.

Why us

Why homeowners pick Modern Builders for gutters & downspouts.

We measure runoff for your actual roof area and pitch — not just "replace what was there." Most homes we visit have gutters half the size they need. Hangers go every 24 inches (not 36) with 3" hex-head screws into rafter tails, not aluminum spikes that pull loose in a season. Downspouts terminate into splash blocks or below-grade PVC that daylights beyond your beds — never dumping water at the foundation.

FAQs

Answers before you ask.

Are gutter guards worth it?+

Yes if you have overhanging trees. We install micro-mesh (not plastic screen) that keeps out even pine needles.

Aluminum vs copper?+

Aluminum is 4–5x less durable and lasts 20+ years. Copper lasts 50+ and patinas beautifully but is a real investment.

Do you repair fascia during install?+

Yes — any rotted fascia is replaced before we hang new gutters. We call you before covering it.

Will you tie into an existing French drain?+

Yes — we can connect downspouts to below-grade PVC that runs to your existing drain system.
