Most accent walls projects don't fail because a contractor made one dramatic error — they fail because small, cheap-looking decisions stack up.
These are the mistakes we see most often on Houston jobs, and the ones we vet every scope against before we start.
1. Skipping primer on MDF or bare wood
Bare MDF drinks paint and blotches. A stain-blocking primer is what makes the finish look pro instead of streaky.
2. Using silicone caulk instead of paintable acrylic
Silicone wont take paint, so seams read as gray lines against a white wall. Paintable acrylic latex disappears.
3. Nailing to studs without a level layout
Eyeballing a grid on a shifted Houston wall guarantees crooked reveals. Always snap laser lines first.
4. Choosing thin dimensional trim that telegraphs seams
1/4" trim moves and cracks with humidity. 1/2"-plus poplar or PVC stays put.
5. Building around outlets instead of relocating them
Cutting trim to dodge switches ruins the pattern. Move the electrical before install.
How to vet your contractor
Read your accent walls bid line by line and ask which of these mistakes are being avoided — in writing. A contractor who welcomes the question is the one you want; a contractor who deflects is the one to walk away from.
If you'd like a second set of eyes on a scope of work or an existing bid, we're happy to walk through it with you.
