Most energy-efficient windows projects don't fail because a contractor made one dramatic error — they fail because small, cheap-looking decisions stack up.
These are the mistakes we see most often on Houston jobs, and the ones we vet every scope against before we start.
1. Non-impact glass in wind zones
Coastal Harris County requires impact-rated windows. Even inland, they cut insurance and noise.
2. Northern-zone Low-E in Houston
Wrong-climate glass rejects less heat. Use southern-climate Low-E with SHGC under 0.25.
3. Insert replacement over rotten frames
Inserts trap the rot. Full-frame replacement with new flashing is often the right call.
4. Wrong flashing sequence
Sill pan, jamb, head — done in the wrong order equals wet walls.
5. Fiberglass insulation at rough openings
Doesnt seal air or water. Low-expansion foam is the correct spec.
6. No drip cap above windows
Water sits on trim and rots the wall below. A drip cap prevents it.
7. Vinyl-only in luxury zips
Vinyl caps ROI in higher-end neighborhoods. Composite or clad wood are worth the upgrade there.
8. Non-certified installer
Manufacturer warranties require certified installers. Verify the credentials.
9. Skipping interior finish scope
Every window needs paint, caulk, and sometimes drywall. Confirm whats included.
10. Cheap manufacturer with no local service
A warranty from a company gone in 5 years is worthless. Pick proven local service.
How to vet your contractor
Read your energy-efficient windows bid line by line and ask which of these mistakes are being avoided — in writing. A contractor who welcomes the question is the one you want; a contractor who deflects is the one to walk away from.
If you'd like a second set of eyes on a scope of work or an existing bid, we're happy to walk through it with you.
