Top 5 Must-Haves When Doing Crown Molding & Millwork in Houston

The 5 details that separate a lasting crown molding & millwork project from a callback — grounded in Houston climate, code, and soil realities.

The difference between a crown molding & millwork project that lasts and one that becomes a callback is almost always in the details that don't show up in a low bid.

These are the specs and design decisions our team insists on for every Houston home — the ones that quietly separate a real professional install from a cheap one.

1. Poplar or MDF-primed profiles

Finger-jointed pine telegraphs joints as it moves with humidity. Poplar and primed MDF stay tight.

2. Scarf joints, not butt joints

Long walls need 45° scarf joints so seasonal movement hides. Butt joints always crack.

3. Coped inside corners

A properly coped inside corner never opens up. Mitered inside corners always do.

4. Backer blocks for tall profiles

Anything over 5-¼" needs a nailer strip so the crown has something solid to fasten to at the ceiling.

5. Caulk, prime, and paint before install (or plan for it after)

Whichever workflow you pick, budget for it. Skipping the paint prep is why crown looks cheap.

The bottom line

Any of these can be skipped to hit a lower price — and every one of them will show up as a problem within a few years. Ask any contractor bidding your crown molding & millwork project which of these are included, in writing. The honest ones welcome the question.

If you'd like to walk through what these look like on your specific home, our team is happy to do a no-pressure consultation.
