Most driveway & walkway projects don't fail because a contractor made one dramatic error — they fail because small, cheap-looking decisions stack up.
These are the mistakes we see most often on Houston jobs, and the ones we vet every scope against before we start.
1. Pouring on uncompacted native clay
No base = cracks within 3 years. 6" of compacted base plus geotextile fabric is the fix.
2. Fiber mesh instead of rebar
Fiber alone doesnt hold a driveway together long-term. #4 rebar on 18" centers is the standard.
3. Under-strength concrete
3,000 PSI mixes crack in Houstons heat and load cycles. Spec 4,000+ PSI.
4. Missing or late control joints
Cuts made after 24 hours push cracks into random spots. Same-day sawcuts direct cracks into joints.
5. Slope toward the house
A driveway that drains toward the foundation is the #1 cause of foundation problems.
6. No expansion joints at buildings
Where slab meets garage or curb, missing expansion joints crack the slab within a year.
7. Skipping the sealer
Unsealed concrete stains, spalls, and cracks 2–3x faster. Reseal every 3 years.
8. Under-thickness for vehicles
4" is car-only. Trucks and RVs need 6" or the slab cracks fast.
9. Ignoring soil moisture during pour
Pouring on parched clay or during a downpour ruins the mix. Pros manage this; DIYers dont.
10. No curing compound
Concrete cured too fast is weak concrete. A cure-and-seal on day one adds years of life.
How to vet your contractor
Read your driveway & walkway bid line by line and ask which of these mistakes are being avoided — in writing. A contractor who welcomes the question is the one you want; a contractor who deflects is the one to walk away from.
If you'd like a second set of eyes on a scope of work or an existing bid, we're happy to walk through it with you.
