The difference between a driveway & walkway project that lasts and one that becomes a callback is almost always in the details that don't show up in a low bid.
These are the specs and design decisions our team insists on for every Houston home — the ones that quietly separate a real professional install from a cheap one.
1. Engineered base for Houston clay
A 6-inch compacted base with proper geotextile fabric prevents the cracking that plagues every driveway installed on native soil.
2. Proper concrete PSI and rebar
4,000+ PSI with #4 rebar on 18" centers — not fiber mesh alone — is the minimum for a driveway that lasts 30 years.
3. Control joints cut in the first 24 hours
Cuts made at the right time force cracks into invisible joints instead of random locations.
4. Positive slope away from the house
A minimum 2% slope directs water away from the foundation — the #1 cause of Houston foundation problems.
5. Expansion joints at all structures
Where the driveway meets the garage, sidewalk, or curb, a proper expansion joint prevents the slab from cracking.
6. Sealed at 30 days and every 3 years
A penetrating sealer stops water infiltration, oil staining, and freeze-thaw damage.
7. Adequate thickness for vehicle load
4" for cars, 6" for trucks and RVs. Under-specd thickness cracks in 5–7 years.
8. Wire mesh or fiber reinforcement in walkways
Even walkways benefit from reinforcement — Houston soil moves them constantly.
9. Broom, exposed aggregate, or stamped finish selected before pour
Finish decisions after concrete is placed usually mean redoing sections.
10. Curing compound applied same day
Slow curing = strong concrete. A cure-and-seal on day one adds years of life.
The bottom line
Any of these can be skipped to hit a lower price — and every one of them will show up as a problem within a few years. Ask any contractor bidding your driveway & walkway project which of these are included, in writing. The honest ones welcome the question.
If you'd like to walk through what these look like on your specific home, our team is happy to do a no-pressure consultation.
