Most fire pit projects don't fail because a contractor made one dramatic error — they fail because small, cheap-looking decisions stack up.
These are the mistakes we see most often on Houston jobs, and the ones we vet every scope against before we start.
1. No fire-rated inner ring
Repeated heat cracks and spalls the outer stone. A stainless or firebrick liner is required.
2. Undersized or unshut-off gas line
Wrong gas line size means poor flame. No accessible shutoff means insurance wont cover it.
3. Combustible surroundings within clearance
Fires that touch overhanging trees or fences cause claims. Respect the 10–25 ft clearances.
4. No drainage in the base
Water pooling in the pit cracks it during rare freezes. Gravel plus weep holes fix it.
5. No safety features
Wood pits need a screen; gas pits need a thermocouple. Skipping these is a liability.
How to vet your contractor
Read your fire pit bid line by line and ask which of these mistakes are being avoided — in writing. A contractor who welcomes the question is the one you want; a contractor who deflects is the one to walk away from.
If you'd like a second set of eyes on a scope of work or an existing bid, we're happy to walk through it with you.
