Most garage doors projects don't fail because a contractor made one dramatic error — they fail because small, cheap-looking decisions stack up.
These are the mistakes we see most often on Houston jobs, and the ones we vet every scope against before we start.
1. Non-insulated door
An uninsulated garage runs 15–20°F hotter in Houston summers. Insulated doors cut that fast.
2. Non-wind-rated door
Non-rated doors fail in tropical storms and take the roof with them.
3. Reusing worn extension springs
Extension springs are louder, shorter-lived, and dangerous when they fail. Convert to torsion.
4. Chain-drive opener under a bedroom
Chain drives are loud enough to wake sleepers. Belt-drive DC is the right pick.
5. No battery backup
Texas power blips constantly. A backup battery keeps the door working in outages.
How to vet your contractor
Read your garage doors bid line by line and ask which of these mistakes are being avoided — in writing. A contractor who welcomes the question is the one you want; a contractor who deflects is the one to walk away from.
If you'd like a second set of eyes on a scope of work or an existing bid, we're happy to walk through it with you.
