The difference between a kitchen remodeling project that lasts and one that becomes a callback is almost always in the details that don't show up in a low bid.
These are the specs and design decisions our team insists on for every Houston home — the ones that quietly separate a real professional install from a cheap one.
1. Plywood-box cabinets, not particleboard
Particleboard boxes fail from any water event. Plywood boxes are the baseline for a lasting kitchen.
2. Soft-close drawers and doors
Once youve had them, slamming cabinets feel primitive. And they extend hinge and slide life.
3. Full-extension drawer glides
Bottom-mount glides only extend 75%. Full-extension undermount glides are the modern standard.
4. Quartz counters over granite for most homes
Quartz is non-porous, seamless at joints, and doesnt need resealing. Granite still wins for outdoor use.
5. Under-cabinet LED lighting on a dimmer
The single highest-impact lighting upgrade in a kitchen. Hardwired, not battery.
6. Range hood ducted outside
Recirculating hoods do nothing for grease or humidity. A ducted hood is the correct spec.
7. Dedicated appliance circuits
Microwave, disposal, dishwasher, and fridge each want their own circuit per current code.
8. Deep single-bowl sink
30–33" single-bowl fits sheet pans and is far more useful than a divided double-bowl.
9. Pull-out trash and recycling
Purpose-built trash pull-outs keep the kitchen looking clean and are the most-used cabinet in the house.
10. Enough outlets on the island
Code now requires them, and pop-up or under-counter outlets keep the counter uncluttered.
The bottom line
Any of these can be skipped to hit a lower price — and every one of them will show up as a problem within a few years. Ask any contractor bidding your kitchen remodeling project which of these are included, in writing. The honest ones welcome the question.
If you'd like to walk through what these look like on your specific home, our team is happy to do a no-pressure consultation.
