Top 10 Mistakes People Make When Doing Outdoor Kitchen & BBQ in Houston

The 10 mistakes we see most often on Houston outdoor kitchen & bbq projects — and how to make sure they don't happen on yours.

Most outdoor kitchen & bbq projects don't fail because a contractor made one dramatic error — they fail because small, cheap-looking decisions stack up.

These are the mistakes we see most often on Houston jobs, and the ones we vet every scope against before we start.

1. Undersized gas line

Grills and side burners pull big BTU. Undersized lines mean slow cooking everywhere.

2. Wrong stainless grade

430 stainless rusts in Houston. Insist on 304 for cabinetry and appliances.

3. Quartz counters outside

Quartz discolors and delaminates in outdoor heat. Granite or concrete only.

4. No ventilation under a covered patio

Any covered install needs a real vent hood — 1,200+ CFM rated for outdoor use.

5. Skipping GFCI and outdoor-rated wiring

Wet-location electrical is code, not optional.

6. No water and drain rough-in

Adding a sink later means opening the concrete. Rough it in now.

7. No overhead structure or wrong pitch

Flat covers pool water. 3:12 minimum, with proper flashing.

8. Non-sealing storage

Unsealed drawers turn into roach hotels. Sealed drawers keep pests out.

9. Under-designed slab

Outdoor kitchens are heavy. A thin, unreinforced pad settles and cracks.

10. Overhead lighting only

You need task light over the grill and ambient light around the space, both dimmable.

How to vet your contractor

Read your outdoor kitchen & bbq bid line by line and ask which of these mistakes are being avoided — in writing. A contractor who welcomes the question is the one you want; a contractor who deflects is the one to walk away from.

If you'd like a second set of eyes on a scope of work or an existing bid, we're happy to walk through it with you.
