The difference between a pavers & hardscape project that lasts and one that becomes a callback is almost always in the details that don't show up in a low bid.
These are the specs and design decisions our team insists on for every Houston home — the ones that quietly separate a real professional install from a cheap one.
1. 6-inch compacted base minimum
Cheap installs go on 2–3" of base. 6" of compacted crushed concrete plus 1" of setting sand is the correct spec.
2. Geotextile fabric between subgrade and base
Fabric prevents Houston clay from migrating up into the base — the #1 reason paver patios sink.
3. Edge restraint on every free edge
Without a rigid edge restraint, pavers spread and the entire patio unravels.
4. Polymeric sand in joints
Regular joint sand washes out. Polymeric sand locks up and prevents weeds.
5. Sealer appropriate for the paver type
Concrete pavers, clay pavers, and natural stone each need different sealers. A wrong sealer traps moisture and destroys the surface.
The bottom line
Any of these can be skipped to hit a lower price — and every one of them will show up as a problem within a few years. Ask any contractor bidding your pavers & hardscape project which of these are included, in writing. The honest ones welcome the question.
If you'd like to walk through what these look like on your specific home, our team is happy to do a no-pressure consultation.
