Most pool design & build projects don't fail because a contractor made one dramatic error — they fail because small, cheap-looking decisions stack up.
These are the mistakes we see most often on Houston jobs, and the ones we vet every scope against before we start.
1. No structural engineering for clay
Houston clay moves pools. Engineered shells with proper rebar cover are non-negotiable.
2. Single-speed pump
Wastes energy and creates noise. Variable-speed is the only correct spec now.
3. Undersized plumbing
2.5" suction / 2" return minimum. Undersized plumbing shortens equipment life.
4. Chlorine tabs instead of salt
Salt is easier, gentler, and outperforms tabs long-term.
5. No freeze protection
Houstons once-a-decade freezes destroy unprotected pool equipment.
6. No automation
Pool automation prevents freeze disasters and cuts service calls dramatically.
7. Under-skimming
One skimmer per 400–500 sq ft. Skimping means constant debris problems.
8. Bad deck drainage
Water pooling on the deck creates mud rings and stains around every pool.
9. Non-compliant safety fencing
Houston has specific fence, gate, and alarm rules. Non-compliance = legal and insurance nightmare.
10. Cheap incandescent lights
LED with a separate transformer saves thousands in bulb-change service calls.
How to vet your contractor
Read your pool design & build bid line by line and ask which of these mistakes are being avoided — in writing. A contractor who welcomes the question is the one you want; a contractor who deflects is the one to walk away from.
If you'd like a second set of eyes on a scope of work or an existing bid, we're happy to walk through it with you.
