Most whole-home rewire projects don't fail because a contractor made one dramatic error — they fail because small, cheap-looking decisions stack up.
These are the mistakes we see most often on Houston jobs, and the ones we vet every scope against before we start.
1. Not upgrading the panel too
Rewiring branch circuits without upgrading service is half a job.
2. Leaving shared neutrals in place
Old shared neutrals violate current code. Fix during the rewire.
3. Skipping AFCI/GFCI everywhere required
These prevent fires and shocks. Modern code requires them across most circuits.
4. No dedicated appliance circuits
Fridge, microwave, dishwasher each want their own circuit per code.
5. Reusing aluminum branch wiring
Known fire hazard. Replace every foot during a rewire.
6. No whole-home SPD
Houstons grid demands surge protection. Cheap insurance during a rewire.
7. Non-interconnected smoke/CO detectors
Hardwired, interconnected, battery-backed detectors are code and life-safety.
8. Too few receptacles
Every wall over 24" needs an outlet per code. Old homes are dramatically under-outletted.
9. Messy panel wiring
Sloppy panels are dangerous and expensive to service. Clean is a mark of quality.
10. No permit or final inspection
Unsafe and unsellable. Always permit and inspect.
How to vet your contractor
Read your whole-home rewire bid line by line and ask which of these mistakes are being avoided — in writing. A contractor who welcomes the question is the one you want; a contractor who deflects is the one to walk away from.
If you'd like a second set of eyes on a scope of work or an existing bid, we're happy to walk through it with you.
