Doors

Interior and exterior doors — solid-core, fiberglass entry, and modern barn/pocket doors.

Typical timeline: 2–5 days
Doors
A door is a first impression and a security barrier. Hollow-core interior doors sound low-grade because they are. Solid-core doors block sound, feel substantial, and don't warp in Houston humidity. Fiberglass entry doors (Therma-Tru, ProVia) don't rot, don't rust, and insulate 5x better than steel. We install with proper shim spacing, adjustable hinges, and multi-point locks on exterior doors. Weatherstripping is applied at install — not a foam kit you buy at Home Depot after the fact.

Materials

What we install vs. what corner-cutters use.

Interior doors

What we install

Solid-core with quality hinges and lever hardware.

Common shortcut

Hollow-core big-box door.

Why it matters: Solid-core blocks sound and feels substantial.

Exterior doors

What we install

Fiberglass (Therma-Tru/ProVia) or solid wood with proper sill pan.

Common shortcut

Steel entry door with no sill pan.

Why it matters: Steel rusts; missing sill pan rots your subfloor.

Hardware

What we install

Grade 2 lever/deadbolt, multi-point on exterior.

Common shortcut

Big-box builder-grade knob set.

Why it matters: Grade 2+ lasts 15+ years; builder-grade fails in 3.

Process

A predictable path — with real durations.

1

Measure & order

3–5 days

Measure openings, order pre-hung doors and hardware.

2

Tear-out

1/2 day

Remove old door and jamb.

3

Install

1–2 days

Set jamb plumb and square, install door, hang hardware.

4

Trim & touch-up

1/2 day

Install casing, caulk, touch-up paint.

Why us

Why homeowners pick Modern Builders for doors.

We shim every jamb at hinges and strike with cedar shims — not the low-grade composite shims that compress and let doors swing loose after a season. Exterior door installs get a properly installed sill pan (self-adhering flashing) so water that hits the sill drains out instead of into your subfloor. Multi-point locks on exterior doors mean three lock points instead of one — much harder to kick in, and they last about the same as good single-point.

FAQs

Answers before you ask.

Pre-hung or slab?+

Pre-hung 99% of the time — comes with jamb and hardware pre-installed. Slab replacement only if the existing jamb is in perfect shape.

Steel vs fiberglass entry door?+

Fiberglass every time in Houston. Doesn't rust, better insulator, more style options.

Can you install a pocket or barn door?+

Yes — barn doors are surface-mount (fastest). Pocket doors require opening the wall for the frame.

Do you match existing trim?+

Yes — we match casing profile and paint color.
