Whole-Home Rewire

Full Romex re-wiring for old aluminum, knob-and-tube, or damaged wiring — permitted and inspected.

Typical timeline: 2–4 weeks
Whole-Home Rewire
Aluminum branch wiring (1965–1975) and knob-and-tube (pre-1950s) are insurance-cancellation waiting to happen. Aluminum expands and contracts differently than copper, works loose at outlets, and starts fires. Knob-and-tube is un-groundable and can't safely handle modern loads. A whole-home rewire replaces every branch circuit with modern copper Romex on properly sized breakers, adds required AFCI/GFCI protection, and brings your home up to current NEC code. We open drywall only where required, patch and prime every opening, and pull the electrical permit.

Materials

What we install vs. what corner-cutters use.

Wire

What we install

12-AWG or 14-AWG copper Romex, color-coded neutrals.

Common shortcut

Aluminum branch wire.

Why it matters: Aluminum branch wire is a documented fire hazard.

Breakers

What we install

AFCI/GFCI per current NEC, brand-matched to your panel.

Common shortcut

low-grade breakers that trip false or don't trip when they should.

Why it matters: The wrong breaker doesn't protect the circuit.

Devices

What we install

Tamper-resistant outlets, spec-grade switches.

Common shortcut

Contractor-grade builder outlets.

Why it matters: Spec-grade lasts 20+ years vs 5 for builder-grade.

Process

A predictable path — with real durations.

1

Load calc & permit

1 week

Calculate loads, plan circuits, pull electrical permit.

2

Rough-in

1–2 weeks

Pull new Romex through attic and walls to every device box.

3

Panel & devices

2–3 days

Terminate at panel, install all outlets/switches/fixtures.

4

Inspection

1 day

City electrical inspection.

5

Drywall patch & paint prime

2–3 days

Patch, texture, and prime every opening.

Why us

Why homeowners pick Modern Builders for whole-home rewire.

Every circuit we run is properly sized to its load and protected with the right breaker (AFCI for bedrooms and living areas, GFCI for wet locations, dual-function where required). We map every existing circuit before we cut anything so you know exactly which outlet each new breaker serves — no more mystery breakers. Every opening gets patched, textured, and primed before we leave. You provide finish paint; we spray it on.

FAQs

Answers before you ask.

Why can't I just replace the aluminum outlets?+

AlumiConn or COPALUM connectors can help at devices, but the wire is still aluminum. Full rewire is the permanent fix.

How much drywall will you cut?+

Minimal — we run through attics and crawlspaces where possible. Every cut is patched and primed.

Do I need a new panel too?+

Often yes — old panels usually accompany old wiring. See our Panel Box page.

Will my insurance drop me?+

Insurance often refuses coverage on aluminum or knob-and-tube. A permitted rewire restores insurability.
